While there is nothing wrong with any of the companions found in the game, some are bound to fit a given player’s play style more. A majority of the characters also offer a unique quest, allowing the player to get to know them and their history a little better. Without further ado, let’s check out the best companions in the game.

Updated on August 19, 2022, by Ritwik Mitra: Fallout is one of the most well-known gaming franchises around, with Bethesda’s takeover making the series more mainstream than it’s ever been. Fallout 4 is the latest single-player entry in the series that has been pretty great in its own right, featuring a wealth of content along with some much-needed upgrades to the title’s gameplay. There are a wealth of companions that players can use the help of in Fallout 4, and the best of the bunch are mentioned below.

10 Cait

Cait seems like nothing more than a tough cage fighter who loves using Psycho, but that’s exactly what makes uncovering her character so fascinating. Players realize that her toughness actually masks a deep distrust of people and a failure to really open up to people.

She’s a potential romance, and one of the more fascinating ones as well. Watching Cait slowly come out of her shell and open up to the protagonist makes for a heartwarming moment, even given the somewhat jarring nature of Fallout 4’s character writing.

9 Paladin Danse

The Brotherhood of Steel is one of the most iconic groups in Fallout history, with Bethesda paying their dues to this faction time and time again across their games. In Fallout 4, one of the members of the Brotherhood of Steel that players can have as a companion is Paladin Danse.

His Power Armor already makes him a force to be reckoned with, but it’s the truth about Paladin Danse that will shock everyone, including himself. It turns out that he’s a synth as well, and he decides to sacrifice himself for the Brotherhood’s cause — a decision that the Sole Survivor can influence as well.

8 Strong

Strong is a Super Mutant that can be found if the player frees him from a cell during the quest Curtain Call. It’s pretty handy to have a Super Mutant around in battle, although players should keep in mind that Strong can only use equipment looted from other Super Mutants.

Strong’s companion perk helps the player if they use melee weapons more often than other weapons, which is a boon for close-range combatants. Keep in mind that he has a weird range of likes and dislikes, so players should be a bit wary of their actions and maybe check a guide if they wish to raise the Super Mutant’s affinity.

7 Longfellow

Longfellow is the only permanent companion the player can get during the Far Harbor DLC. Longfellow will give the player help as they travel around the island and battle enemies. His companion perk is also useful, as it will cause the player to take 25% less damage from animals found on the island.

As expected, Longfellow will become hostile if the player destroys the town of Far Harbor. If the player sides with the town, they can learn about Longfellow’s past and why he lives outside of the town. He is a pleasant companion to travel the lonely island with.

6 Piper Wright

Piper Wright is a journalist living in Diamond City that can become a companion after the player completes an interview with her. Piper has the benefit of giving the player healable items, such as Nuka-Cola and sweet rolls. She also has a history of getting herself into and out of tough situations, making her a good fighter.

Piper’s companion perk is also useful, as it will give players double XP when they successfully persuade someone and when they find a new location. With most characters disliking Piper’s journalistic ways, traveling with her will also provide humorous dialogue.

5 Curie

Curie is a companion who is first found inside Vault 81 during the quest Hole in the Wall. When first met, Curie is a Miss Nanny robot. While she seems like a pretty okay companion at first glance, the truth is that her character really opens up once she expresses the desire to gain a human-like body of her own.

This leads to one of the more engaging character quests in the game where players embark on a memorable journey to get Curie’s body back for her. It makes for a great time that lets players really invest a ton of time into one of Fallout 4’s more well-written characters.

4 Robert MacCready

MacCready will be recognized as the mayor of Little Lamplight by dedicated fans of the Fallout series. It is an interesting change to see MacCready go from an immature child to an adult who cares deeply about his family. MacCready has grown up in the wasteland and was part of the Gunners, making him a companion who can fight well.

MacCready is able to be commanded to steal items, and he also gives the player a perk when he reaches the highest affinity which boosts hit percentages for headshots by 20% in VATS. Raising MacCready’s affinity should be easy, as stealing and picking locks will raise it.

3 John Hancock

Hancock is the ghoul mayor of Goodneighbor, perhaps best known for the unique outfit that he wears. Hancock can give the player chems and his companion perk is one of the more useful ones. The perk makes it so that when the player has 250 rads, their critical meter fills up 20% faster.

Hancock also offers humorous dialogue when traveling, such as when the player is not wearing any clothes and travels to a new city. Hancock will mention he enjoys the view and may call the player “emperor.” He is also witty, responding with appropriate snark to characters who mention his ghoul appearance.

2 Dogmeat

Dogmeat is one of the first companions the player will meet and can be used to retrieve items found around the player. No matter what the player does, Dogmeat will love them and will never dislike anything that is done, which proves once again that dogs really are a man’s best friend.

Traveling with this charming companion will always prove to be a great time, with Dogmeat always coming through in a battle and showing why he’s as vicious as he is adorable. The Sole Survivor will have a great time as they explore the world with this trusted and a rather helpful companion.

1 Nick Valentine

Nick Valentine is the synth detective that is found by the player inside Vault 114. Valentine is able to hack terminals for the player, bypassing the need to guess the password. He is also a fan of doing good, which can help the player if they are trying to walk the straight and narrow for a given playthrough.

Valentine’s companion perk is useful, as it gives the player an extra chance when hacking a terminal and reduces the lockout time by half. He also has higher hit points than other companions, making him pretty decent in a fight.

Fallout 4 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
