The big red guy is returning to the world of video games in the form of Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, a roguelike that looks as if it was torn from the pages of Mignola’s comic books. Those who cannot wait for Hellboy’s latest adventure have plenty of options to scratch that itch for the unexplained and the supernatural.

7 The X-Files: Resist Or Serve

In this PlayStation 2 exclusive game, FBI hopefuls can get into the shoes of either agent Fox Mulder or Dana Scully. They go on a series of adventures from the Rocky Mountains to Tunguska in this Resident Evil-styled adventure, investigating happenings ranging from witchcraft to the extraterrestrial.

The X-Files: Resist or Serve is perfect for fans of Hellboy’s adventures in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Mulder and Scully have encountered all kinds of paranormal oddities, from ghosts to genies and wolf people. Hellboy and Mulder would have plenty of stories to share.

6 The Darkside Detective

Heavily inspired by the likes of The X-Files and Twin Peaks, The Darkside Detective follows Francis McQueen of Twin Lakes’ Darkside Division as he investigates a series of strange cases. The gameplay is a classic point-and-click adventure, covering multiple case files.

The adventures of The Darkside Detective sound like the average case file for the BPRD. The first one involves a murder linked to ancient magic and parallel dimensions. The game keeps up the weirdness with scenarios like ghosts of classic horror authors arguing over whose work is scarier, and an adorable lake monster in hiding.

5 Hades

Hades is a roguelike following Zagreus, the son of the ruler of the Greek Underworld, as he fights his way out in order to reunite with his birth mother, Persephone. Every matter of foe will want to slash, shoot, stab, petrify, and ignite him, sending him back to the lowest floor, where he will have to start the journey over.

Hellboy would be very comfortable among the residents of the Underworld. He could have a pint with Zagreus in Hades’ break room or mingle with the three Fury Sisters. The variety of monsters guarding the way out gives him plenty to smash and shoot as well.

4 Wolfenstein

The original Wolfenstein from Id Software was a cornerstone first-person shooter, using the limited technology at the time to craft a fun World War 2 adventure. In 2001, developer Gray Matter Interactive would revive the franchise with a supernatural twist. Himmler’s paranormal division is using occult arts to power Hitler’s army.

These experiments are in line with the origins of the titular smack-talking demon. Nazi scientists open a portal to Hell, and in the ensuing chaos, a red, stone-fisted baby crawls through with an appetite for Baby Ruth candy bars.

3 Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 was many gamers’ first entry in the franchise. It took the traditional formula of the previous games and gave it a modern spin, including over-the-shoulder camerawork and satisfying gunplay, as well as some cheesy dialogue.

The scenario in this game is a case that Hellboy and his friends would probably pick up. A creepy cult takes over an entire village and infects all the residents with a mind-altering parasite that takes them over from the inside. The local merchant better have guns big enough for Hellboy’s stone hands.

2 Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Anyone who is a fan of the Nintendo Wii needs to pick up this hidden gem. Muramasa: The Demon Blade is a side-scrolling hybrid of an RPG and a brawler that follows two parallel stories in the Genroku era of Japan. The title would later receive an updated port to the PlayStation VITA called Muramasa: Rebirth.

Many of the enemies the two protagonists fight in the game are yokai, mischievous Japanese spirits. Hellboy has gone up against yokai before in the direct-to-video movie Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms, in which an ancient blade sends him to a ghostly version of Japan, and he must stop the demons called Thunder and Lightning from wreaking havoc.

1 Deadly Premonition

FBI agent Francis York Morgan makes a living investigating the bizarre. Deadly Premonition sees York in the small town of Greenvale, Washington, looking into a ritualistic murder.

Things quickly take a supernatural turn, which would be the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense’s department. Creepy red vines entangle buildings, and zombified humans roam the halls, attempting to kill him. To make things worse, a legendary killer in a raincoat is out to get him as well. Fortunately, he has his imaginary friend Zack by his side, as well as his ability to glean clues from his cup of coffee.
