Grass-type Pokemonaren’t hard to come by in the Sinnoh region, and there are many great options for players to choose from when building their team. These plant-like monsters are often appealing, as they sport some unique moves and can be effective against various Pokemon types.

Whether players are looking to diversify their team or build a team of dual-type Pokemon with Grass-type at the forefront, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl give players plenty of options. These are the best Grass-type Pokemon in the games.

Updated April 1, 2022, by Stephen LaGioia: Pokemon fans were giddy with excitement following the recent news of a new, open-world Pokemon game. Known as Scarlet and Violet, this upcoming mainline game will feature a brand-new generation of monsters to catch.

But in the meantime, there are still countless colorful Pokemon to find and places to explore in the DS remakes Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, for Nintendo Switch. This game alone features nearly 500 Pokemon once the National Dex is unlocked, with legendaries Arceus and Darkrai recently joining the ranks. And while there’s a wide variety of types in this game, Grass-types are particularly well represented here. As such, it seemed fitting to revisit this list and explore more of the best Grass-types in Sinnoh.

14 Bellossom

This festively-dressed Pokemon can be deceptive with its colorful, flower-like appearance. With its offensive prowess, Bellossom can overwhelm opponents with moves like Petal Dance and Giga Drain. While dating back to Generation 2, this Pokemon still emerges as one of the most prominent Grass-types.

To score one in Brilliant Diamond and Pearl, players can find the unevolved Oddish lurking in Sinnoh’s Bogsunk Cavern, as well as Gloom on Route 224 or the Swampy Cave. A Sun Stone is needed to evolve Gloom into Bellossom.

13 Victreebel

This menacing plant monster is the evolved form of Weepinbell, which needs a Leaf Stone in order to reach its full potential and become Victreebel. While fairly vulnerable (especially against weaknesses like Fire), Victreebel can overpower foes with both normal and special moves.

Players will first need to seek out a Bellsprout or Weepinbell before scoring this beast, by walking along the grassy regions of Route 224, 229, and 230. They also emerge within the Swampy Cave, Sunlit Cavern, and Still-Water Cavern.

Victreebel’s Stats:

12 Vileplume

It may look cheery and benign with its smile and pretty red flower pedals. But this large, toxic Pokemon can be deceptively tough, wearing opponents down with Poison moves and debuffs. This monster tends to win the war of attrition when it comes to special moves, both offensively and defensively.

To find the unevolved forms of Vileplume (Oddish and Gloom), scour the grassy parts of Route 224, 229, and 230. Swampy Cave, Swampy Cavern, and Still-Water Cavern also are home to these flowery creatures.

Vileplume’s Stats:

11 Abomasnow

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Abomasnow is dual-type Grass and Ice-type Pokemon. Abomasnow has decent stats all around, though it isn’t the fastest Pokemon. This can cause some issues in fights; though its robust HP can negate much of this. Abomasnow also falls short with its 4X weakness to fire-type moves but makes up for it with a wide-ranging move pool.

Abomasnow’s unevolved form, Snover, can be caught on both Route 216 and Route 217 while walking in tall grass, and an evolved Abomasnow can also spawn from the tall grass in Mt. Coronet.

10 Cradily

The “Barnacle Pokemon” Cradily is a dual-type Rock and Grass-type Pokemon. Cradily shines as a defensive Pokemon with 97 Defense and 107 Special Defense, and only four weaknesses (fighting, steel, bug, and ice-type). Cradily also has a unique shiny form, swapping from green to light red/pink.

Cradily, and its unevolved form Lileep, are fossil Pokemon and can be obtained in the original Diamond and Pearl from a Root Fossil.

9 Roserade

Roserade is a great choice for players who need a strong, versatile Grass-type on their team. It is easy to come by early on and is a great attacker once evolved. With a Special Attack of 125, Roserade packs a punch. Roserade’s dual-typing of Grass and Poison lend well, giving it many resistances (Water, Electric, Fighting, Fairy, and Grass).

Roserade’s unevolved form, Roselia, can be caught on Routes 212, 221, 224, 225, and 229 while walking in tall grass. Roselia does require a Shiny Stone to evolve into Roserade, which can be found at the end of the bridge south of Pokemon Rangers Kyler and Krista on Route 228.

8 Leafeon

Leafeon is always a safe choice for players looking for a strong Grass-type Pokemon. With a solid 110 attack stat and a 130 defense stat, Leafeon can take and dish out damage, making it a great addition to any team.

Leafeon’s base evolution, Eevee, can be most easily found in tall grass in the Trophy Garden found on Route 212. Eevee requires a Leaf Stone to be evolved into Leafeon. Players will find a Leaf Stone just south of the entrance Fuego Ironworks entrance.

Leafeon’s Stats:

7 Meganium

Meganium is a Grass-type starter Pokemon from Generation 2. Meganium is as solid as they come, with a 100 in both Defense and Special Defense. Meganium can hold its own in most situations, with fire-type moves being the biggest threat. Fire-type moves are fairly common though, so this can pose a problem for the Pokemon.

Chikorita, Megaium’s unevolved form, can be found in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s expansive Grand Underground. Chikorita will evolve into Bayleef at level 16 and Meganium at level 32.

Meganium’s Stats:

6 Torterra

Torterra is the Grass-type starter Pokemon in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Torterra’s Attack and Defense stats are great, but with a 4X damage weakness to ice-type moves, Torterra can get into trouble quickly during battle. Torterra especially has trouble during fights with ice-type trainers, like Snowpoint City’s gym leader Candice.

Torterra can be obtained by choosing Turtwig as the player’s starting Pokemon. Should players want to obtain one later in the game, it can be found in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’sGrand Underground.

5 Exeggutor

Exeggutor is a Grass and Psychic dual-type Pokemon, with a high Special Attack stat. Exeggutor’s dual-typing gives it many great resistances (ground, water, grass, electric, fighting, and psychic), but also a 4X damage weakness to bug-type moves. This Pokemon can compensate for its weaknesses by having its high Attack and Special Attack stat, which helps it take out opponents quickly.

Exeggutor’s unevolved form, Exeggcute, can be found in Great Marsh while walking in tall grass. Players will need a Leaf Stone to evolve Exeggcute into Exeggutor.

Exeggutor’s Stats:

4 Sceptile

Sceptile is the Grass-type starter Pokemon from Generation 3. Sceptile has a huge speed stat of 120 and can outpace most opponents in battle. Its Special Attack is also impressive, coming in at 105. Sceptile is a great Pokemon for players to add to their team, and one of the best Grass-type starters available in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Treecko, Sceptile’s base evolution, can be found in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’sGrand Underground. It will evolve into Grovyle at level 16, and Sceptile at level 36. Players should be able to level up their Pokemon quickly thanks to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s Exp. Share.

3 Venusaur

Venusaur is the Grass-type starter from Pokemon’s first generation. Venusaur’s Special Attack and Special Defense stats set it apart from the other Grass-type starters. Venusaur’s Poison and Grass dual-typing give it a nice range of resistances in battle. This fan-favorite Pokemon can plow through Team Galatic Grunts with no problem.

Bulbasaur can be caught in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’sGrand Underground. Bulbasaur can be evolved into Ivysaur at level 16 and Venusaur at level 32.

Venusaur’s Stats:

2 Tangrowth

Tangrowth has enormous stats across the board, with its only real downfall being its 50 Speed and Special Defense. With a stat total of 535, Tangrowth has stats nearly as high as some legendaries and mythical Pokemon available in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and can be a real threat to most opponents it faces.

Tangrowth’s unevolved form, Tangela, can be caught in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s Grand Underground. The Tangela will evolve once it has learned the move Ancient Power.

Tangrowth’s Stats:

1 Shaymin (Sky And Land)

These two coveted Pokemon are unique on a multitude of levels that extend beyond their super potent stats across the board. For one, the cuter (and slightly weaker) land version of this hedgehog can be evolved into the Grass/Flying-type by using a Gracidea flower during the daytime.

To secure these appealing monsters, players needed to partake in a limited event, announced by Nintendo. Unfortunately, this event has ceased as of this writing, but could very well make a comeback.

Players had to receive Oak’s Letter via the Mystery Gift feature. This would become available after playing at least 2 hours of the game. From there, Shaymin could then be caught after entering the Hall of Fame and scoring the National Dex.
