RELATED: Gaming Franchises That Completely Changed Genres (For Some Reason)
Thankfully, most games understand the importance of a good final boss and ensure that their games have a satisfactory and bombastic conclusion that fans will have a great time with. The following bosses serve as great climactic battles where the player has to give their all to take down a powerful threat and save the world.
Updated on June 5, 2022, by Ritwik Mitra: Most JRPGs try their hardest to provide long and satisfying journeys that end in a bombastic fashion. While some games in this genre fail while delivering the latter, this isn’t always the case. Rather, there are games that put in their all to craft a wonderful final fight that tests players to their very limits. The games that accomplished this brilliantly are mentioned below.
10 Ultimecia (Final Fantasy 8)
Ultimecia is a villain that seemingly comes out of nowhere in Final Fantasy 8. It’s revealed that she was the one manipulating most of the evil figures in the game, and the party embarks on a journey through time and space to defeat her.
At the end of Ultimecia’s domain, they finally go toe-to-toe against this amazing boss fight. The sheer brilliance of this boss fight cannot be stated enough, with the player dealing with four phases of this fight before finally finishing Ultimecia off once and for all.
9 Nyx Avatar (Persona 3)
Nyx Avatar was a horrid being with the sole goal of ending the entire world. In a last-ditch attempt, SEES goes above and beyond to defeat this powerful boss before it can enact this goal once and for all.
The fight is easily one of the longest and most grueling battles in Persona 3, with the player having to employ every strategy in their arsenal to beat this boss. It’s a great battle that ends with the main protagonist using their own life force to seal this evil away once and for all.
8 Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7)
Final Fantasy 7 is considered to be one of the greatest games in the series for a good reason. The franchise absolutely escalated in quality with the seventh entry, and this is in no small part due to its legendary antagonist, Sephiroth.

After hunting down Sephiroth for the longest time, the party finally manages to face off against this imposing villain once and for all. It’s an incredible encounter, ending in a fight against the powerful Safer Sephiroth.
7 Galdera (Octopath Traveler)
Octopath Traveler is one of the best modern JRPGs courtesy of its brilliant gameplay and amazing boss encounters. After all eight stories are over and done with, players realize that there’s a final showdown that they need to complete as well.
This comes in the form of a fight against Galdera, where all eight fighters need to band together to defeat a powerful threat once and for all. This battle is extremely challenging, and players need to deck out their entire party properly to ensure victory in one of the hardest and longest battles in the entire series.
6 Yaldabaoth (Persona 5)
Persona 5’s ending moments see the real world and Mementos merging together in a rather contentious manner. Thankfully, the Phantom Thieves make one final stand to fight against the corruption of the Holy Grail, also known as Yaldabaoth himself.
This fight is a long and arduous one, but it’s extremely fun to get through regardless. Persona 5 is a game full of many highlights, and this final encounter is the perfect cherry on top… although its effect is somewhat diminished in the Royal Edition, where the story continues on to deal with Maruki’s treachery too.
5 Giygas (Earthbound)
Giygas is one of the most interesting antagonists in video game history. He first appeared as Giegue in Mother 1, where he was portrayed as almost sympathetic in nature. Earthbound opted to go with a more cosmic horror route, perverting what happened to Giegue at the end of the first game. It makes the second game’s finale all the more impactful.
Coupled with the final boss’ surreal imagery, Giygas makes for a highly uncomfortable and thematic final boss fight. Better yet, the battle makes use of Paula’s Prayer mechanic, more or less as a means of formally welcoming the literal player into the game’s final boss fight. It’s a great final boss that’s as creepy as it is strangely somber.
4 Lavos (Chrono Trigger)
What makes Lavos such a meaningful final boss is the fact that players can theoretically defeat him incredibly early in a playthrough. It’s not going to happen if someone’s playing Chrono Trigger for the first time, but that it’s possible has a lot of weight. Not just that, Lavos can be defeated at multiple different points in the game.
Coupled with Chrono Trigger’s groundbreaking New Game+ system and its wide array of alternate endings, Lavos serves as quite a few different story branch’s final boss fight. In all of them, he’s incredibly tough (sometimes even tougher than the main game’s final Lavos fight) and helps bring the game to a triumphant close.
3 Galbalan (Ys: The Oath In Felghana)
It really can’t be stated just how insane of a remake Ys: The Oath in Felghana is. It took the black sheep of the series and remade it into what is arguably the single best action RPG of all time. Oath in Felghana has amazing combat, amazing level design, and amazing boss fights. The final battle against Galbalan stands out as a real tour de force.

It’s a battle that engages and challenges the player in every way. It’s not enough to brute force Galbalan. Players need to genuinely think about their actions and the immediate gameplay consequences they may have. It’s a tense, bombastic conclusion to one of Falcom’s best games.
2 Dark Gaia (Terranigma)
Few people have played Terranigma, but those who have can attest that it’s one of the better Super Nintendo games that never got the chance to make it to the States. The third game in the unofficial Soul Blazer/Quintet trilogy, Terranigma follows the exploits of a boy, Ark, as he slowly rebuilds the world.
It’s a genuinely poignant game that manages to comment on the nature of humanity better than most titles today. The final boss is one of the hardest in the game, but it makes for an incredibly climactic showdown that takes advantage of everything at the player’s disposal. The fact that Terranigma transitions into one of the most powerful endings in gaming history is the cherry on top.
1 Kefka (Final Fantasy 6)
If DracoLord made multi-form final boss fights possible, Kefka made them fashionable. Final Fantasy 6’s final boss fight is so long that every single one of Kefa’s forms has its own unique track to designate the next part of the battle. It’s a long, grueling fight that may not be too hard, but it is certainly epic.
Best of all, players can tackle the dungeon however they want— splitting their party into three different groups. Players can even enter the final dungeon with a reduced party as only Celes, Edgar, and Setzer are mandatory before getting the airship. It’s not just one of the best JRPG final boss fights, it’s one of the best final bosses, period.
